HOUSE + HOME | How to Clean Your House Fast for Unexpected Guests

August 3, 2015

I love living in Harlem, and it’s really started to feel like “home.” I have my coffee shop (Madiba), my cleaners and wine shop (right next to each other on Madison Ave), my gym (Blink on 116th), my bar (Corner Social) and now I’m excited to say that I also have a beauty boutique (Vivrant Beauty on St. Nich). I live a few blocks from Central Park (literally walking distance) and I get to work in 30 minutes, door-to-door. We also have a lot of friends who live in Harlem too, which is great. That means every so often, I may get a text like, “Hey, I’m on Lenox, are you home?” followed by “I’ll be there in 15 minutes.”

Gaaaaaaahhhhhhhh 15 minutes!

It never fails that when someone wants to pop by our apartment, it’s like the day before I’m going to clean up, which means the place is literally at its worst! Even though we don’t live in a huge apartment (it’s New York after all), it’s overwhelming to figure out how to clean up the house really quickly without forgetting anything. Luckily, I’ve been in this predicament so many times that now I have a pretty easy way to show you how to clean your house fast for unexpected guests.

Unexpected Guests

For me, cleaning the house means quickly means I concentrate on three things: getting the dishes out of the sink, getting the bathroom in order, and cleaning all the floors. And I do so in that order. First things first: if there are dishes in the sink, I put them into the dishwasher so they’re out of sight (and if I need to run the dishwasher, I do this first so that while the dishes are going, I’m taking care of the rest of the house). I also take anything that’s on the countertop and put it in its proper place, then wipe the countertops down with a cleansing wipe.

Next, in the bathroom, I pull out some more cleansing wipes and clean out the bathroom sink (and wipe down the faucet), I use glass cleaner to quickly get rid of spots on the bathroom mirror, and I always clean my toilet. This is because for whatever reason, it seems like the first thing somebody wants to do when they come to your house unexpectedly is use your bathroom! I have no idea why it works that way, but it does, so I make sure the bathroom is spruced up and that’s always a PRIORITY for me when people come over.

Lastly, I tackle all the floors, except for the ones in our bedroom (I usually just close our bedroom door). It used to take up a lot of time: first sweep up all the floors (and I sweep our area rug) and then use a vacuum after sweeping. Now it’s just one step and a lot less time with the Dirt Devil® 360° Reach™ (and of course time is of the essence when your house guests call you to say they’re on their way from just down the street!)

The Dirt Devil 360 Reach is an awesome little vacuum, literally: it’s super light and little, but also really powerful. And with its compact size and variety of cleaning attachments (which don’t take up a ton of space because they all stay packed away in the little bag), it works well for tight spaces like ours that have different types of flooring: we have hardwood throughout the living space and bedroom, tile in the bathroom, and then an area rug. I loved that I could use one tool for the rug and another for vacuuming and dusting the hardwood and tile (we were using two separate vacuums for these jobs!) I was amazed by the amount of dust and hair and general crap the vacuum was able to pick up—mind you I had just vacuumed like 5 days before!

How to Clean Your House FAST for Unexpected Guests feat. the Dirt Devil 360Like I said…it’s a powerful little vacuum. The SWIPES™ microfiber pad captures the dust from the hardwood and tile better than what we were using before, and the vacuum’s Cyclonic Filtration allows it to cut through any mess with really powerful suction. It also has an extra-long 27-ft. cord, which means I can clean the entire kitchen and living room area without  unplugging.

Check out the Dirt Devil 360 Reach for yourself! The special package price of $149.99 is available at https://buydirtdevil.com and includes an additional attachment package valued at $75. But this offer is only available while supplies last, so I’d hurry up on that.

Do you have a special cleaning routine for unexpected guests? Do you think the Dirt Devil 360 Reach could help shave some time off that routine like it has for me? Let me know in the comments!
