Happy Monday, and I hope you had a great weekend!
Since I cut my hair, I’ve been using perm rods to style it. On Friday night I was feeling super lazy and just couldn’t bring myself to wash and set my hair though, so I tried flat twists in my short hair for the first time.
I did 11 flat twists in my hair (6 in front, 5 in the back). I used Dove’s Quench Absolute Supreme Crème Serum to set the twists in my old, dry perm rod set from the past week. I slept in the twists overnight and unraveled them the next morning.
Friday’s flat twists were basically the same twists I did over two years ago (that somehow went lowkey viral). I actually saw my face on Pinterest on Friday, and it inspired me to try the flat twists again! Do you remember the photo below?
Yep, that was two years ago, before I even dyed my hair or anything. I parted my hair the same way on Friday and unraveled the twists the same, but this time I used my pick to fluff out my curls. Using a pick makes a huge difference–I get way more volume, and my hair has great shape because of my cut.
I loved how it turned out! I had so much volume, and because I’d rolled each twist into a bantu knot, I had nice fluffy curls all over my head. The style lasted two days without re-twisting, so I had big hair all weekend! When I went to sleep I didn’t cover my hair or pineapple or anything. I just slept on a satin pillowcase (on my side, so I wouldn’t smush my curls too much). In the morning I fluffed with the pick and that was it.
I liked not having to wash my hair in order to style it, but I know that I can’t start using flat twists regularly. My hair needs water, so I really should be washing and co-washing twice a week. Also, flat twists aren’t a low-manipulation style, and the constant pulling and tugging and re-twisting could mean breakage for my fine hair. And my hair tangles more easily in a twist-out than it does in a roller set, so I think I’ll stick to roller sets right now. It’s nice to know that if I ever wanted to switch it up (or if I was feeling super lazy and wanted to wait another day before washing or co-washing my hair) I could easily wear a flat twistout.
Last night I cheated and put my hair in flat twists again, so I’m wearing a twistout today as well…but I will be washing and deep conditioning tonight, and then my hair will be back on perm rods.
What’s your go-to style when you can’t wash and re-style? Let me know in the comments!
