I just bombarded you with photos of my bare, 30-year-old face (sans everything, including a decent eyebrow) because it’s confession time, and who makes a confession in a face full of makeup?
Turning 30 was pretty awesome. But for the the past few weeks, being 30 has been a little scary. Let me explain…
I’ve always had youthful features, and because I’m short, no one would ever even consider that I might be my actual age. But lately, I don’t know…it’s like I can tell that I’m 30. I feel like I’m starting to look my age. When I look in the mirror, I see a woman! A real-life, going to have kids someday, thinking about the future woman. It’s like I’ve finally realized that turning 30 means it’s only older from here. You don’t stay 30. And you won’t always look 30.
I know I’m probably overreacting, but this is just how I’ve been feeling. I know myself though–these feelings will definitely pass, and I’ll think to myself when I’m actually old and wrinkly and gray, “How crazy were you that one time you thought you looked old at 30?” And I’ll have a chuckle and a glass of wine and move on. But I wanted to share these thoughts with you because if you’ve ever felt this way about getting or looking older, hey–you’re not alone, and this too shall pass.
I knew that getting older meant that my skin would start changing, so I made a conscious decision upon turning 30 to take better care of my skin. I’m working on getting more restful sleep, doubling my water intake (I’m shooting for 50 ounces a day!) and oh, tomorrow I start exercising. At the gym. For real. I’ve also used turning 30 as an excuse to buy infinitely more skincare products than I’ve ever used. Because you know, that’s what you do when you take care of your skin.
So how does one take care of a 30-year-old face?
Well, first things first: take off makeup before bed. I’ve also stopped washing my face with hot water in the shower. On days I don’t use foundation, I use Neutrogena Oil-Free Makeup Remover to take off mascara and under-eye concealer, and then tone with Thayer’s Rose Petal Witch Hazel. On days when I do use foundation, I recently started using EVE LOM Cleanser, and I love it. It gets rid of makeup (all of the makeup) without making my skin dry. And it doesn’t irritate my skin like facial cleansing cloths do. After cleansing I tone and then moisturize with La Mer. I used the original Creme De La Mer Moisturizng Cream this past winter, and now I’m using the La Mer Moisturizing Soft Cream, which is a lighter, silkier version of the original, perfect for going out in warmer temperatures. On the nights I wear a mask to bed, I’ll also moisturize my lips with Fresh Rose Hydrating Eye Gel Cream overnight (I highly recommend using a moisturizing eye cream on your lips to heal and prevent chapping). Oh, and I’m doing better about wearing sunscreen every day (although I’m still really bad). My sunscreen of choice for years has been Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sunscreen.
I have to remind myself that even on days when I don’t feel young, I still am, and my skin is still pretty young too. So I only wear powerful serums at night before bed. I’m currently using both Lancome Advanced Genefique and Boots No 7 Protect & Perfect Advanced Serum. Some days I feel like the Lancome works better, other days I feel like Boots works better. The Lancome is pretty expensive, so I want to be sure it’s really a superior product before I decide to repurchase. I also started using L’Oreal Paris Revitalift Triple Power Eye Cream, but again, only at night before bed (and not every night).
My favorite part of my skincare routine is wearing masks. I wear them every chance I get. My favorite mask (and favorite skincare product in general, next to the original La Mer moisturizer) is my Fresh Black Tea Firming Overnight Mask. It’s worth every single penny. This mask instantly makes my face look and feel better. It minimizes any redness I have from sensitivity (as I’ve gotten older, my skin has gotten more sensitive) and my face feels so firm and soft the next morning after I rinse the mask off. It’s amazing. And on mornings when I feel like my skin is looking a little dull and needs a quick pick-me-up, I’ll use my Fresh Rose Face Mask to bring some life to my face. What I love about this mask is that it only needs five minutes to work. I recently started incorporating the Biore Self-Heating One Minute Mask into my routine. So far I’ve only used it twice, but I really liked the effects. It made my skin look and feel clean, if that makes any sense. I think that’s because it gets rid of all of the stuff that’s stuck in the pores and then ends with a really tingly sensation. I also have an alpha-beta peel by Dr. Dennis Gross, which is supposed to do everything from clear up skin imperfections and blemishes to brighten and create younger-looking skin, but I haven’t used it yet because I just haven’t had the time!
Yes, it’s a lot. But it’s oh, so worth it. Bad days aside, I know that I’m doing something great for my skin and it feels so good to take care of myself. I won’t be 30 forever, and deep down I know that’s okay. I want to be sure I look as young as I feel for the rest of my life and enjoy every God-given moment in the skin I’m in.
