There was a point in my “natural hair journey” when I was wearing Curlformer sets all the time. Every week I’d wash my hair and put in Curlformers, wear my hair like that for the week and then re-style after wash day the next week. I haven’t used Curlformers in a while, and I haven’t used them on my short hair at all, so this weekend I decided to see what my hair would look like with some Curlformer curls.
I cowashed my hair with Trader Joe’s Nourish Spa Conditioner and then used Camille Rose Naturals Coconut Water Leave-in Treatment. I let that sit in my soaking wet hair for about 10 minutes, and then I wrapped a towel around my hair in order to soak up the excess water. I let my hair air dry until it was barely damp, and then I set my hair in really small sections using Eco Styler gel (I like to use the Long and Narrow Curlformers on short natural hair).
I sat under my dryer for about an hour and then took out the rollers. Then I separated each curl into three sections using Oyin Handmade’s Sugar Berries Pomade.
At this point I knew my hair was going to need a bit more “oomph.” So I separated some of the curls a few more times (surprisingly I created very little frizz while doing this…) and then went to my secret weapon, my Afro pick.
I feel like it took FOREVER to get my hair to look how I wanted, but I eventually picked and fluffed and shaped my hair into what you see. I really liked it! It was very different from how I usually style my hair. I don’t usually wear the “messy look,” but this was really fun and perfect for being out and enjoying the sunny weekend we had here in NYC.
I was expecting a bit more height, but it was hard for me to get my hair to stand straight up, probably because I twisted the roots of each section before installing the Curlformers. Next time I’ll leave the roots untwisted and see if that helps. Also, I didn’t do a good job of preserving the style at night, so I may need to think through how to do that. I’ll try this style again because I really want to get bigger hair next time, but I don’t think this will be a go-to style for me just yet. Just something I can do when I want to switch things up.
Let me know what you think! How did you style your hair this weekend? And have you ever used Curlformers? I love my perm rods, but I think Curlformers are the most amazing rollers EVER.
