I cannot even believe that I’m showing you these pictures. I mean, seriously.
These are photos from my very first Valentine’s Day with Quentin, way back in 2008. Six years ago.
Quentin and I were not officially dating in February 2008, and neither of us expected that we were going to really do anything for Valentine’s Day. But I like holidays (okay, I love holidays), and we’d been on a few dates, so I guess Q figured he’d give it a shot. So he surprised me with a Valentine’s Day date.
Thank goodness he gave me a heads-up beforehand. I remember I spent hours on my hair, and I didn’t like it once it was done, but Q thought it was nice. He was surprised I’d gotten so dressed up; I wore a party dress, and he wore jeans. But we had a good time. I got flowers, he baked me cookies (totally unexpected), and he bought me a little stuffed puppy I named “Walter.” We ate dinner at a Chinese restaurant and then he took me home. It was sweet, and we enjoyed each other’s company.
The crazier thing about these pictures when I look at them is that neither of us expected we’d be celebrating Valentine’s Day together every year after that. Ha! Life is so funny that way. If you’d told me in 2008 that I was going to end up marrying that guy, one of the first people I met when I started at UF in 2003, I wouldn’t have believed you. But here we are, six years later, planning an October wedding. It’s so crazy!!!
Valentine’s Day is the perfect holiday for telling someone how much you care in a way he or she doesn’t expect. You don’t have to surprise someone with a date. You may have lots of friends who aren’t in relationships or dating anyone right now. Wouldn’t it be great to give them something for Valentine’s Day, just to let them know you’re thinking about them?
