So I finally did it. I dyed my natural hair before my 30th birthday. Another thing to cross off my 30 before 30 list!

I got it done so long ago, I’d all but forgotten that I hadn’t put any photos up on the blog!!! So before I took down an old Curlformer set, I decided to take a few photos so you all can see the results!

I dyed my hair when I was in D.C. the weekend before last. I’m so glad I did it in D.C. because I had my girls on hand for moral support (xo to Zaynab and L’Kel for staying in the salon with me!) I was SO NERVOUS! I felt like I was in the doctor’s office. It was that nerve-wrecking. I mean, I’ve never done anything to my natural hair. Ever. Sure, I’ve used henna in my hair, but that’s like a deep conditioner. This dye job was the real deal.

The stylist lightened my hair twice before actually coloring it blonde. The henna left over towards my ends gave me this golden brown color, so there’s a cool ombre effect — it goes from super blonde at the roots to golden blonde at the ends. And the section itself really isn’t that big, but my curls really multiply the effect and make it look like there’s a lot more colored hair than there actually is.

Can I tell you something? I absolutely HATED my hair when it was first done. I thought I’d made a huge mistake. The color was just so different from what my hair had always looked like. Now? I can’t imagine why it took me so long to dye my hair. This feels like me. It’s feisty (like me!) but it isn’t overwhelming. The color is great too, and I’m already thinking of being a little bit blonder…

I’ve been very good about making sure I moisturize and seal my hair day and night, but especially now that I’ve bleached my hair. I washed it myself for the first time, and it didn’t feel like straw or anything. It still feels like the rest of my hair, and I aim to keep it that way! My fine hair is fragile enough as is. I definitely took a risk with the color, but I’m not going to be a slave to my fine strands. Hopefully twice daily moisturizing and deep conditioning weekly is enough to keep my hair healthy and breakage free.

Great post! This is totally making me excited to dye my hair in the summer! Was your stylist a regular stylist or does he/she cater specifically to natural hair?

    • Thanks Sarah! My stylist was Ethiopian, so she knows a ton about natural hair (she was natural too), and all of my natural friends in D.C. go to her!

    • Thanks Asia!!! It’s growing out, and I’m trying to figure out if I should re-do it for my wedding in October, or go black for the wedding and do something else next year. Decisions, decisions.
