I feel like I’ve been on “go, go, go” mode for the past few weeks. I go to bed at midnight and wake up at 6:00 AM so that I can fit everything in. I have my street wear line, Feisty Society Clothing Company, set to launch on August 30th. I’m hosting a natural hair event at BaubleBar’s pop-up in Soho on August 5th. Quentin and I are going to Jamaica from July 20th – July 27th, which is great, but means I essentially lose a week of working on my other projects. And then of course, I work full-time M-F. There truly aren’t enough hours in the day, and my spiritual life has definitely suffered, although I hadn’t noticed. I mean, I say a quick “thank You” to God when I wake up in the mornings, but then it’s straight to the computer, or I’m on my phone checking email. And I used to listen to my Daily Audio Bible app at nights, but by the midnight or 1:00 AM rolls around, all I want to do is sleep, so I say a quick “goodnight” to Jesus and it’s off to bed.
This morning though, I opened the Bible (yes, the actual book, not an app), and I got chills. Seriously, I had goosebumps. I had missed being in the Word so much, and I didn’t even realize it until today. There’s just something I love about being in God’s presence, about being in His Word, and I’ve been missing that intimate connection with the Lord. My excuse for not indulging in my relationship with God was that I was too busy doing all things I needed to do. But the Bible says we’re to seek a relationship with God first, before we think of what we need (Matthew 6:24-33). Instead of neglecting my relationship with God because I’m “too busy,” I should be discussing my plans with him (Jeremiah 29:11), asking Him for guidance (Isaiah 28:29), and allowing Him to do even more than I could do on my own (Ephesians 3:20-21). Because really…there’s no way for me to get ALL of these things done in such a short time without God.
If you’re on a deadline–studying for the bar or for your boards, or under pressure to finish a thesis or project at work–I challenge you to take time out of your busy schedule and spend some uninterrupted time in the Word. I promise, you’ll feel more refreshed, and you’ll be even more productive than going it alone. Don’t leave God out of your plans or your day-to-day life. He gave you these amazing opportunities, and He wants to be there to help you every step of the way. Let’s put God first and watch Him do amazing things in our lives!
