Feisty Fashion Feature // Natalie of The Tiny Closet
April 19, 2013
I’m probably more excited than you are that we’re featuring Natalie today. I love Natalie’s blog. I love Natalie’s life: she lives in California, designs and sews a lot of her own clothes, and is married to a darling photog. Did I mention she can make her own clothes?!?!? Natalie is everything we look for in Feisty Fashion Feature: her blog is centered around a dope concept and she has AMAZING STYLE.
Tell us a bit about your blog and why you started blogging.
The Tiny Closet is about living with a small closet- not having a lot of clothes – either by choice or not by choice. It started out for me not by choice. I had been laid off from a well–paying job and I’d had years of heavy spending habits. The blog became a daily record of the adventures in dealing with not being able to shop for new clothes all the time and making the utmost best of what I already had. It got to be so much fun and actually lifestyle changing! The Tiny Closet has evolved now into a proud choice and lifestyle, one that I encourage every woman to [consider]. It’s also about really getting creative with clothing and style instead of just buying what you see on the mannequin. [It’s about] making the clothes you wear about you and not about trends or money.
What are 5 fashion items (clothes, shoes, accessories, etc.) that describe your personal style?
Tiny Closet Collection tees that I created. I made them to be drapey, oversize, simple and feminine. They will be available to buy in the near future!
Harem pants!! They’re loose, loungy, exotic and super cool.
Christian Louboutin Pigalle heels in patent leather. Simple, fierce but minimal…less is more with those babies 🙂
AG Jeans “The Stilt” fit me like a charm and go with everything!
And also – leather leggings. I have yet to buy an authentic pair but The Row make a gorgeous design.
What’s your go-to hairstyle?
My hair has been natural for 4 years and my go to style has ALWAYS been wash.and.go.period. Lol! I am a no-fuss girl when it comes to hair. I wash it nearly every day and let my hair do what it shall.
How do you feel about the presence of Black style bloggers (too many, not enough, etc.)
I think it’s phenomenal. In the fashion industry, how many fashion icons are black??? Maybe a handful. Before style blogging, Black women really had no authentic voice on style or fashion. It’s evolved quite a bit now, but even to this day, the predominant commentary on what to wear is severely unbalanced and, dare I say, unfair. So I think there’s room for tons and tons more! The more Black women show off their own style and fashion choices, I think the less we will be pigeon holed into one–dimensional stereotypes of what a Black woman should look like or what she should wear.
Tell us anything else you think we should know.
Hm, let’s see… Most people ask me where I live, who takes my photos and what camera I use so:
I live in Los Angeles – recently moved there about 3 months ago. My husband takes my photos with his Canon 5d Mark2 camera. He is a freelance photographer/videographer and owner of Media Design Elements.
I'm Krystal! The Feisty House is the space where I share daily inspirations, fashion and beauty finds, bits and pieces of my life in New York, and experiences from other creative and entrepreneurial women who are dreaming big and creating their own happiness. Thanks for reading!
